The court has sanctioned the trial of an action the Vacuum Oil Company against the “Age” newspaper proprietary, claiming £20,000 damages for al leged libel. REGULATING PRICES. DEATH! ONE OF VICTORIAN COMMODITIES BOARD. MELBOURNE, Feb 11. The Commodities Beard has decided that in view cf the high prices of our Od per leaf in the inner suburbs and lOd in the cuter, are not unfair prices for bread. The Board fixed the maximum wholesale prices for apricot and gooseberry jams at 8s 3d, mixed apricots and pineapple Ss 6d, and plum 7s 3d per dozen 21b tins.
AN OUTBREAK OF SMALLPOX. SYDNEY, Feb 11. There is an epidemic cf virulent smallpox at Hepburn. Thirteen cases have been reported in the township and in the two adjoining settlements several are in a bad condition The residents did not report them, believing it to be chickenpox. N.S.W. LOANS. Mr Holman states that of seven millions of loans falling due by June Ist next, five millions have been obtained.
The Government will shortly float in London another two million loan on the same terms as the iast.
