'RECEIVES SALUTARY PUNISHMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb 11. At the Police Court today, Trooper John James Clayton, concerned in the brawl in Manners Street, Saturday night, was fined £5 or one month for resisting arrest, and £2 or seven days for disorderly conduct while drunk, and was ordered to pay £2 15/, damage to the cab in which he was taken to the lock-up. The alternative to the latter was sev.en days' imprisonment. Robert Porteous Brown, ex-trooper, arrested at the same time as Clayton, was also severely dealt with, being sentenced to two months for assaulting a constable, and fined £3 or one month for using obscene language, £5 or one month for assaulting a civilian who was assisting the police. He was also ordered to pay 25/, or three days' imprisonment for damaging a constable's uniform. His Worship refused to impose a fine in future cases of assaulting the police as he held the latter mhst be protected as far as possible. He commented on the serious nature of the charges and said it was deplorable to find so many disgraceful scenes which were created by troopers. Inspector Hendry said the majority cf Che men at. Trentham camp who came into town were sober, earnest young fellows, who conducted themselves with decorum.
