LORD NORTH LAND’S DEATH. NEW ZEALAND CONDOLENGES. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb 10. On behalf of New Zealand the Governor sent a message of condolence to Lord Ranfuily, cn the death of his sen, Lord Northland, to. which he received the following reply: “We thank New Zealand for the kind telegram. We are proud that our only sou gave his life fer his country.—Signed Ranfurly.” SHIPPING CHARGES. WELLINGTON, Feb 10. The Council cf the New Zealand Marine Underwriters’ Association have advised that rates from, the Dominion to the United Kingdom ports are new forty shillings; cargo transhipped from the Un(ioV( Kingdom to America from New Zealand one par cent, additional —irli a return of half per cent for neutral steamers across the Atlantic. CHEAP FARES FOR SOLDIERS. OAMARU, Feb. 9. The; Hen. James J Allen says that Mr Holdsworth, manager of the Union Company, has informed him that the company have arranged tc grant return passages at single rates to members of the forces at Trentharn visiting their homes, providing they produce certificates from the commanding officers. He understands that the Mml dart Parker Company will probably arrange similar concessions, but he has no definite information about the latter company. ALLEGED CANTEEN SALE. OF GIFTS TO SOLDIERS. AUCKLAND, Fob 10. Commenting on a Christchurch telegram, that a pack of cards sold at one of the canteens in Egypt had inscribed on a card inside, “Presented by the Auckland Patriotic Committee for men of the Expeditionary Force,” Mr Massey said it would be very wrong indeed if articles meant icr free distribution were sold. Throughout the canteen the Government had received no information dealing with thtse complaints. Pie personally could not believe anything of the kind would bo allowed to occur. IMPORTING RAILWAY ENGINES. NEW ZEALAND FIRM’S STATEMENT. WELLINGTON, Feb 9. At a. meeting cf the Wellington Industrial Association, reference was made to the importation of American engines. In reply to an inquiry by the secretary, Messrs ‘Price Bros., cf Thames, wrote stating they had an or der from the Government which would keep their shops fully occupied for two years. They could not therefore tender for these engines. In any case, an American firm contracting could deliver the finished locomotives in less time than a New Zealand firm would require to import the material wherewith to construct them. Mr T. Ballinger remarked that, this information should have been made public. lie heard that Price Bros, could net make the engines, but did not believe it. The chairman stated the difficulties of procuring engineering material from England was at the present time not realised by the public.

TYPHOID IN MAORI CAMP. AUCKLAND, Feb 10. Typhoid fever has broken out among the (Maori soldiers in camp at Avondale. Five men are in the hospital witn the disease, and one, an Orakei native, who had not been inoculated lias died. Almost all the men have now been inoculated, and those hot yet treated are being attended to immediately. the authorities in consequence do not regard the outbreak with alarm.
MAORI SOLDIERS’ HEALTH
EVERY PRECAUTION TAKEN. AUCKLAND, This Day. A Maori youth, named Roera, who died at the hospital on Monday, was not a member of the Maori contingent in camp here, as was incorrectly reported in the morning papers, but a schoolboy from the Three Kings College, living at Orakei. Since the Maori camp began the general health has been remarkably good. Some three - or four cases of typhoid occurred but none with serious consequences.
All the men in camp have been inoculated, and every precaution taken against infectious disease, particularly with new arrivals from country districts.
