FOR SHIRKING DUTY. (By Telegraph.'—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Feb. 9. At Dunedin several territorials appeared at the Police Court this morning. charged with failing to render personal service under the Defence Act. An officer of the Defence Department stated that shortly after war broke out it was announced that there would be no further prosecution. Sometime quite suddenly a number of men ceased attending parade. Mr Bartholomew, S.M., endorsed the remarks of the officer that the present was no time for a man to shirk his responsibilities and he must impose fines which would make shirkers realise their duty and harden them up. The four defendants were each fined £2. and costs. Another was fined 10/ and costs. Other cases were adjourned.
