A SOLDIER’S PRIVILEGE (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb 8, The Prime Minister informed a "Post” remoter to-day that it had been decided by the Governor that soldiers who obtain leave from their officers to visit relations prior to departure from New Zealand, shall be granted return tickets at single fares

AUCKLAND, Feb 8. Edward Hooper, who pleaded guilty at Gisborne to theft and having misappropriated large sums of money, and with having falsified a bank book, was ordered to undergo two years’ reformative treatment.
Frank Albert Mcflroy, step-father of Hooper, charged with receiving stolen money from his step son. and who, according to the judge, had acted a very despicable part, was sentenced to two years’ hard labour.
Leonard George Bracell, for forging and uttering at Hamilton, was ordered to undergo one year’s reformative treatment. Albert Edward McQuark, for an unnatural offence, received seven years’ imprisonment, AUCKLAND, Feb 8. At the Supreme Court Charles Samuel Lake, charged with setting fire to a railway station at Tauranga. In consideration of previous good character he was sentenced to two years' reformative treatment. Leslie Finlayson McKenzie, a postal servant, charged with stealing postal packets, was admitted to the maximum period of three years’ probation. Ernest Adams was found guilty of incest and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. .1 ' ‘ ..'yi A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. • ’ : "i WELLINGTON, Feb 8. Harry Dorge, of the sth Wellington Regiment, while on duty at the fort at Kaiwarawdra met with a serious accident at an early hour to-day. He was assisting to beat out a fire on the hillside, near the powder magazine, when stones, crashed down the-incline and fractured his skull His condition is somewhat serious.
PROGRESSIVE HASTINGS. , i ANGLICAN CHURCH BUILDING. HASTINGS, Feb 8. Yesterday was a Red Letter day with the Anglicans at Hastings, on the occasion of the consecration of the new portion of St Matthew’s Church by the Bishop of Waiapu, assisted by Bishop Williams and Archdeacon Ruddock The architecture of the new build ing is late gothic and it is massively constructed in ferro-concrete and cost £7,000. It comprises a chancel, morning chapel, organ chamber, large vestries and a tower 80 feet high. It is built on to the old wooden church, the intention being to demolish the latter and erect new nave, aisles and transcepts, as a peace offering at the end of the present war. The new building is a welcome addition to the architecture of the town, which has been improved lately by the completion of a handsome new hanking house for the Union Bank Tenders will also be called shortly for the erection of a large theatre, bank premises for National Bank, and a large block of business premises hi Heretaunga Street.
