BPBEME COURT SENTENCES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. G. At tiie Supreme Court, Arthur Leomud Russell, aged 24, tour cfldiicej against :•. boy. was sentenced ro five years. Albert Edward Greenwood, aged -I, a recent arrival from England, way sentenced to a year's Inipriscnmeui; for assault, and two years' reformative treatment for attempted carnal knowledge of a child. George Slavish, fcr attempting to break and enter, theft from. a. dwelling, nine charges, received two years en each count, sentences to be concurrent. Mary Jane Capla, for housebreaking at Bulls, was sentenced to a year's iefcrmatlvo treatment. William Samuel Beehre, for forgery and uttering;, was admitted \o probation fcr eighteen months and ordered tc refund the money, p:<y costs, end reside with his mother. Frederick Maurice Barlow, fcr theft cf money at Stratford, while bailiff of the Magistrate's Ccurt was sentenced to four months. Charles Geddes, aged 65, for false pretences at Blenheim, received three years and was declared an habitual criminal. Alfred John Burrows, found on duelling without lawful excuse, and two charges of theft, was sentenced to two years. James Percy Williamson,. with previous convictions, obtaining credit by fraud, was sentenced to six months and declared an habitual criminal. Oscar Stangbye, breaking, entering and theft, received a year, and three years' rei'ormative treatment.
Chailes Hector Dudley, forgery and uttering, got six months, and three years' reformative treatment. AN UNSEEMLY BRAWL. COMMITTAL FOR CONTEMPT. DUNEDIN, Feb. 6. At the Police Court, to-day, W. E. J.- Maguire was charged with threatening at Ratray Street, on January 5. Whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned. After this case had been heard the Magistrate instructed the police to lay an information against Jonathan Alexis O'Brien for using insulating words in a public place, with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace. It.was alleged that O'Brien had been struck by Maguire after the latter had been provoked. Maguire was called as the principal witness to give evidence against O'Brien, but he declined to do so, and after numerous opportunities given him by the Magistrate to reconsider his decision was finally committed to prison for seven days for contempt. In giving the decision in the case against Maguire, the Magistrate said considerable provocation had been given and inflicted a fine of £IOO or 24 hours. The origin cf the trouble was a discussion ever the Bible-in-schools question. Maguire being a Soeial-Deir.ccratic and a candidate for Dunedln West at the general election.
MORE DISFRANCHISEMENT. DUNEDIN CENTRAL ELECTION DUNEDIN, Feb. 6. Mr Belcher, secretary of the Seamen's Union, informed a reporter today, that thirty members cf the crew of the Maunganui and one belonging to Tahiti, whose names are amongst the hundred and five seamen on the supplementary roll fcr Dunedin Central, had their votes disallowed by the Colector of Customs, for reasons given under the new aw. If such men wish to record their votes they can only do so at Wellington, where their articles are taken out. and only in the electorate in which the Customs-house is situated. AUCKLAND FIRE VALUABLE PICTURE LOST. AUCKLAND, Feb. 6. A fire in Volcanic Street, Mo'unt Eden, destroyed two houses occupied by Nconan and Baker, who lost all their furniture, inclu'ding a picture valued at £350, won by Noonan at Auckland Exhibition. A TRAIN DERAILED. WELLINGTON, Feb. 6. THAMES, Feb. 6. The Thames express, bound for Auckland, ran into a mcb cf cattle near Paeroa. The engine, three waggons, and one carriage was derailed. The line was torn up No passengers were injured. DUNEDIN CENTRAL. OFFICIAN COUNT. STATHAM'S MAJORITY INCREASED. DUNEDIN, This Day. The official count increases Mr Statham's majority to 28., the figures now being Etatham 3,857, Munro 3824. The counting of absentee votes, a dozen cf which are still to come, is now proceeding.
