A BRUSH WITH TURKS. ENEMY SUFFERS HEAVILY. FIFTY BRITISH CASUALTIES. Press Association—CopyrigT.it, (Reed. 8.50 a.in.) CAIRO, Jan. 27. There is much activity on the Suez Canal. Troops and warships are assembling. It is semiofficially stated that a reconnaissance took place, our force's inflicting severe losses on the Turks near Mezera. Th» British casualties were fifty. Fighting also occurred east of Kantara, in which the British casualties were five. TURKS OVER CAUTIONS. WATER PLANE INFLICTS LOSSES. (Reed. 9.40 a.m.) CAIRO, Jan. 27. Turks at Katara opened fire with mountain guns. Our patrol replied with machine guns and rifles. The Turks did not show any desire to come to close quarters. Small bodies of men at three other points, east of the Canal, did not come into contact with the British troops.
A hydroplane bombed a Turkish column at Birmursadaa, inflicting some losses.
ENEMY’S COSTLY REPULSE, (Reed. 2.40 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 27. The Press Bureau states: The enemy made several violent attacks against our first division in the neighbourhood of Labassee on Monday; but they were repulsed with severe loss: three hundred being killed and fifty-five taken prisoners in one place alone. GERMAN FOOD SUPPLY. (Reed. 8.50 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 27. The German Government’s commandeering of corn is regarded in official circles as the result of preventing the Wilhelmenia's owner from conveying supplies destined for Germany. (Reed, 1.25 p/m.) . AMSTERDAM, Jan, 27. Official reports state that the Berlin Government has seized all stocks of corn distributing it to communities on a population basis until the next harvest.
