RECRUITING MEETING.
I t '• A GLEAM OF HOPE. DUNEDIN, Jan. 26. An enthusiastic recruiting meeting was held at Port Chalmers last night. The Hen. Jas. Allen, referring to the tact that New Zealand had done even more than asked by the Imperial Government, said the brightest gleam of hope lay in the fact that the demand tor 25 per cent, of reinforcements bad been reduced by a man who -knew more about it than any man on earth— Lord Kitchener Nevertheless, in artillery at least, New Zealand was going to send 100 per cent, in the next two or three reinforcements. The reduction
| proposed by Lord Kitchener in the i percentages of reinforcements was 15 per cent .infantry and 10 pgr cent mounted. Mr Allen continued, we want you New Zealanders to supply us every two months with 1800 men. Ws have sufficient in camp now for the next two lots of reinforcements, and for officers and non-commissioned officers of the third lot. We want to enrol and register every young man will, ing to make sacrifice for .Empire., and flag. We want, to have them register--ed and we want them to continue work. The greatest service any young men can render the Empire, till called * upon to sacrifice his life, is to keep up the industries of his country and inaintain its finances by working.
