RANGIWAEA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent)

The social arranged by the ladies "of j Rangiwaia on Friday last in aid of the | Belgian Relief Fund turned out a! splendid success. In spite of the j event being advertised in the Taihape Times the public being invited, very few came from outside the "block." Local settlers, however, turned out almost to a man and not only was an enjoyable afternoon spent, but a very profitable one. When it eoines to getting money out of people, men must certainly take a backseat to the fair sex. Dozens of different ingenious means were employed to get those present to part with their sixpences and shillings, and when the proceeds were counted proved far from having been in vain. In fact everyone seemed cheerfully to part with all his.or her available cash, recognising that the cause was a worthy one. As an instance, it may be mentioned that a fat lamb given by Mr J. G-armansway swelled the funds by nearly £4. The most interesting event was the sale of the Belgian flag, which the secretary had obtained from, the Belgian Consul. A well-attended dance was held in the evening when the flag was put up at auction. Mr Wilkinson and 'Mr Jim McDonnell bought it respectively for £1 and 10 shillings, both handing it back to the Committee. It was then laid on the floor of the hall and everyone present invited to throw some money on the flag by which means nearly f.O shillings were collected. It was decided to have the flag hung in the hall as a memento of the occasion. Great prnise is due to those who initiated and carried out the function nearly everyone assisting. in some wav. That it was successful was

nrovftrt by the fact that mere than 30 rounds was netted Mrs Arthur, of Hihttahi, whose playing is much apnrecisted. generously gave her services free for the evening.
