Sir Douglas Mawscn, at the National Geographical Society, defender! the achievements of Rear-Admiral Wilkes, Antarctic explorer, in 1840, v. ho was eourt-martialled on account of allegations preferred by fellow-explorer.?. Sir Douglas Mawscn asserted that with few exception, Rear-Admiral Wilkes correctly mapped the Antarctic coastline. The mistakes he made were due to mirages.
