A telegram received in Amsterdam from Berlin states that, after long negotiations the war indemnity for the city cf Brussels has befen fixed ’ at £1,800,000, instead of the £8,000,000 at first demanded, £IOO,OOO being payable weekly. The spectacle was witnessed in Wellington on Monday afternoon of five German prisoners being marched up Cuba Street between the fixed bayonets of a squad cf territorials, in charge of an officer. They were beingmarched to the Alexandra Barracks, preparatory to being interned on Soames Island. “I asked him for half-a-crown which he owed me, and instead I got a punch on the nose. It was nothing very serious, but it was a punch on the nose.” Such was the tale told by Arthur Roddy in the Magistrate's Court at Wellington in evidence against George Long, charged with assault. “It’s all a make-up story,” protested Long. “He came up to me and said, ‘Hello, you’re one a month before your time, ain’t you?’ With that I gave him a push. There were a lot of ether fellows around.” Unfortunately for Long, he admitted to the arresting con_ stable that he had given Roddy a “smack on the nose, and a jolly good one. too.” In the face of this evidence all doubt in Mr. D. G. A. Cooper’s mind was dispelled, and his Worship imposed a fine of £l, in default seven days in gaol.
