THE LOSS OF THE FORMIDABLE.
STRONG CRITICISM BY LORD CHARLES BERESFORD. LONDON, Jan. 14. Lord Charles Beresford, in a letter to ibe Press, says the Formidable was lost under conditions whose repititi’en after the less of Aboukir and Cressy was thought impossible. In both cases the ships were sent to waters infested by submarines and unprotected by destroyers. The efficacy of such protection was shown by the fact that submarines were unable to injure the .British squadron on the Belgian coast. It was unpardonable that officers and crews should be so exposed. RUSSIAN REINFORCEMENTS. GERMANS FROM FALKLAND FIGHT. (Recd_ 5.50 a m.} ’ LONDON. Jam 1-1. The Times states - that ft million Russians recntly reinforced their trout. Two hundred German survivors of the Falkland Islands engagement have arrived in England. PROGRESS REPORT VIOLENT ACTIONS IN BELGIUM. (Reed. 8.50 a.m.) PARIS, Jan. 14. Von Kluck is commanding in the neighbourhood of Soissons. A communique states that mist hampered the artillery in Belgium. There has been violent cannonading around Nieuport and Tpres. The Belgians blew up an ammunition depot at Stuyvenskerke. Our artillery effectively bombarded the enemy .near Lens,.-. and . there has been heavy fighting north of Soisson* We have progressed slightly north-west of Crony and maintained our positions there, despite fierce attacks, but were forced to give ground before Vregny. Floods in the Aisne carried away several bridges, endangering communications. We therefore established a position south of the river, between Crony and Missy. We blew up the German sapheads north of Beausejour.
