The news boys' strike against tin ’ proposal of the evening papers to increase the price to eightpence Tor twelve copies instead fourteen, has been in operation a week. Jt started by" boycotting the “Sun." and selling the “Evening News,’’ with the intention of forcing the former to give way; then they would attack the “Evening News." The latter has no\,v refused to supply the news boys with papers. It is claimed that vendors make £l2 weekly. Both sides are firm. The vendors, who have the support of suburban agents, have formed an association. The proprietors have issued an ultimatum, fixing the price at ninepenee a dozen. Pa-, pors are now unprocurable in the si rents. HORSEFLESH A FOOD. - AN AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL. GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT APPROACHED. (Reed, 9.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 9. The Managing Director of the firm of Pittson and Badgery has written to the Comptroller of Customs, asking if horse flesh is exportable. He points out that in the great demand for meat for war needs and Europe’s starving thousands, horse flesh would be highly appreciated as food. On the Continent the horse is regarded as a clean animal. Any objection to utilising it as food could only be sentimental. A client of the firm stated that nondescript horses were of little value for work, but being very fat they would be a treat to the starving thousands on the other side. A PATRIOTIC RACING CLUB. (Reed. 9.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 9. The Victoria Racing Club has presented a further sum to the war fund, which brings its total up to £5,117. STATE LABOUR UNIONS. A GENERAL FEDERATION. (Reed. 9.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 9. Investigation on the recent disappearance of £2OOO worth of Commonwealth bank notes, shows that it was a carefully planned coupe. The parcels of useless paper vynich. replaced the parcels of notes copied the latter down to the smallest details. Apparently,the coup was carried out after the parcels of notes left the hands of the Treasury. COMMONWEALTH - POSTAGES. , (Reed. 9.20 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 9. Mr Sharp, Federal member for Oxley, Queensland, declared that high prices are due to 4 operations of the Meat Trust. Queensland insists that only Federal action is capable of dealing with the matter. Grafton’s demand for separation is the outcome of the Minister for Public Works declining to continue the free Ferry service.
