OBITUARY

DEATH OF MR G. D. BRAIK. CHIEF SCHOOL INSPECTOR. Very general regret will be cause' 1 , by the announcement of the death of Mr G. D. Braik, who passed away cr Saturday morning in his 57th year. The deceased underwent a serious op. eraticn on Christmas Day, and seemed to be recovering, but sank on Saturday. The late Mr Braik had resided in Wanganui for nine years, having occupied the position of Chief Inspector cf Schools in (he Wanganui Education Board's district. He was born at Gortley, near Aberdeen, Scotland, and graduated at Edinburgh University. Coming to New Zealand thirty years ago, he became a teacher in Otago, where his ability soon brought him to the front, he eventually being appointed Inspector of Schools, which position he held til] his appointment in the Wanganui district. Of his work in Wanganui in connection with technical and agricultural ?vork, as well as secondary and primary education, too much cannot be said. He w r as recognised as one of the ablest men in the Dominion and he did not sparh himself in giving the country the ben. efit of his knowledge and powers. The deceased was a quiet man, who did not advertise himself, but all who came in contact with him knew his worth. He leaves ar widow', two sons and a daughter .and to them will gc deep sympathy in the sad bereave ment that has come so suddenly upon them. A POPULAR INGLEWOOD RESIDENT. INGLEWOOD, Jan. 4. Mr Herbert B. Curtis, J.P., of Inglewood’s oldest residential firm of Curtis Brothers, and who was three years Mayor of Inglewood, died unexpectedly last evening. He had been ailing for a few' days, but not to cause any uneasiness until a few hours before hi? collapse. (Reed. 8.40 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 3. Mr Percy Holden Illingworth, M.P., chief Government Whip, died of typhoid.
