NEW YEAR'S EVE.
1914-1915. The si rets cf the town on N*«v Year's K'.e were throned much as they were or, Christmas Eve. Everybody semod hopeful for the Lest a*d ii-.ippf. There was another "good night's business done by our shopkeepers, though not quite as good as a week ago, many expecting, perhaps, that shopping would be possible to-day. It has been the custom in New'Zealand for people to congregate to see the Old Year out and the New Year in. It is within memory of many that some of these people, in making their fun, hove not been too mindful of the feedings and rights of others, but so far nc very bad eases of larrikinism have coin*' to notice in Taihape and its environs. One or two boys were noticeable iu back streets at midnight and as they are known, they may be called upon to; replace gates and otherwise remedy tie undoing they were so foolish to indulge in. It was remarked that when young men were old enough to perform acta of this kind they were old -jnough t« taliL their place in fighting for the preservation of their birthright. Howr-ver, n-itlmig of a very serious uatuiV sciu;* to love happened. Midnight service was conduce.! in the English Church by the viear, Kev P. Stent, which was fairly well attended.
The street opposir.fi the post o&hit was a scene of more than ordinary Lie. A crowd had gathered round a Jno>p Jack, who as giving away articles, aud otherwise playing ui.cn the general credulity of young and old as to sail very close to a law that has been enacted to protect those who are not able to look after themselves, when Cheap Jack methods are practised. As this particular loud-mouthed gentleman was allowed to proceed, it must be assumed that he kept within the law. With the usual noise of music, bells, singing, shouting, and praying, the most fateful year of our generation glided uto another year that is pregnant with rrouble and concern for us. Everyone >\ill hope that events may culminate h, i peace that will never again be broken in a similar manner.
