MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS.
MEETING ,0r COUNCIL. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Town Kali, last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. L. Arrowsmith), Crs. Deban, H. J. Doherty, G. W. Wrightson, R. Healey and J. P. Aldridge. The Health Inspector tor the Wanganui Hospital District reported one case of typhoid and one of dyphtlieria in the Taihape Borough, both of which had received hospital treatment. Ho reported the closing of the Raetihi Isolation Hospital and that the Maoris of the Taihape district were now clear of typhoid. There had been one death from dyphtlieria in the Taihape district.
FINANCE
The treasurer reported the state of the bank balances as follows: Dietrict fund account (dr.}, £1,966 ISs sd; loan act., No. 1 (dr.), £934 Is 9d; loan act., No. 2 (dr.),- £oo2 2s lid; Interest act., (dr.), £428 Os 7d; Oval Domain act. (cr.), £32 18/10; Accounts amounting to £97 8/10 were passed for payment.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER’S REPORT The Electrical Lights and Waterworks Committee recommen led the adoption of the electrical engineer's report showing particulars cf the revenue and expenditure of the Borough’s electric light supply during the month cf October as follows: Revenue from private consumers, £lO9 14s lOd; revenue from pumping, £l4; reevnue from Town Hall, Its; revenue from street lighting, £lO 16/8; revenue from Municipal Office and Library, £2 12s 6d. Total, £l3B Is.
Expenditure electric supply, £OS Ps 3d; expenditure pumping, £2l 15s lOd; expenditure street lighting, £l3 3s 2d. Total, £l3O Ss 3d. Revenue from private, consumers, October, 1913, £BS 5s lOd. —Adopted.
FOREMAN’S REPORT
The Works Committee recommended lire adoption of the Borough Foreman’s report which read as follows: During the fortnight just ended, a serious blockage occurred at the sawage deposit tank; this has now been cleared and alterations effected to prevent any recurrence of this kind. A further portion cf the septic tanks has been cleaned cut, and all care is being taken to ensure a continuance of the efficient working of same. A complete flushing of various portions cf the sew. erage system has also been canned out. Work is at present proceeding in Kearins’ Pit, the face of which is being cleaned out to enable a further quantity of metal and sand to be procured for future requirements. Four men are at present being employed. While inspecting various premises to ascertain whether or not they had private drains connections with the sewerage system, I Ihavdj jeome across some fifteen private drains on which no ventilation shaft has been coni needed. As this is a serious menace to health and is also entirely contrary to the by-law, I have to strongly recommend that notice be served on the owners to compel them to comply with the by-law in this respect. The report was adopted. GENERAL. It was resolved that dim Worlds Committee visit the Borough Council’s metal pit and report to the next meeting the state cf the said pit. Mr Gregory was conditionally given permission to graze his cows in the western part of the Borough. ■ His Worship reported that a number cf Belgian Relief Fund one shilling lists had been received and distributed in the town. A number of’ them were now practically filled. The lists will be collected on Monday next. The Returning Officer was granted permission to store election boxes under the Town Hall. It was decided that the Council’s office be closed from noon on the 24th hist, till the 2nd approx. , The Council then adjourned till January 15th, 1915.
