MAORI BAND AND GLEE CLUB

TOWN HALL, TO-NIGHT,

The Palmerston Standard says: An exceedingly bright entertainment of a class not often seen in Palmerston North was given in the Opera House last evening by the Hawke’s Bay Maori Agricultural College Military Band and Glee Club. The Maori Agricultural College was recently established near Hastings by the Mormons, with the object of educating their Maori followers in the art of farming, and the institution appears to be a flourishing one. The musicians who provided last evening’s entertainment are pupils of the college, and are at present on a tour of the Dominion with the laudable object of helping the Belgian Relief and Maori Contingent Funds. All the members of The band 3 how musical talent, although, according to their conductor, Mr W. Smith, they have only had about a year’s tuition. Their playing and singing was excellent, the audience demonstrating its appreciation of fhe items rendered by many hearty rounds of applause. Palm, erston owes a debt of gratitude to the Maori Agricultural College Band for a generous action this morning. request was made half an hour before the batch of recruits left for Wellington to join the third reinforcements to play the squad to the railway station. The members were spread over the town, but the conductor promptly secured a motor car and soon had his excellent band ready. Heading the recruits and playing martial airs the party proceeded to the station, where the band played the men off as the train drew out. Their playing met with approbation on all sides, and many eulogistic references were made. A debt of gratitude is well due to them. Many passengers by the Main Trunk express remarked on the playing, and said it was the*best hand heard on the way down.
