AN AUCKLAND FIRE*

SEVERAL NARROW ESCAPES

sy Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 14.

A lire occurred at Hobson Street, about one o'clock this morning, which gutted seven rooms of a large boarding house .owned by Mr C. F Bennett and occupied by Mrs M. Marshall. Mrs Marshall and two children who slept on the ground floor were awakened by smoke. She tcck the children in her arms and jumped from the window, six feet, to the ground. Ten boarders sleeping on the premises had narrow escapes. One jumped from the roof of a lean to 20 feet to the ground. An old man was assisted from his room while the passage was ablaze.

ACCIDENTAL DEATH.

GORE, Dec, 14

William Blcomfield, Aged 17, whose parents reside at Kensington, was accidentally killed on Friday evening at the Pyramid. He was returning home with a team of horses attached to a disc harrow and was found dead on the road. He had evidently fallen under the disc as the back of his head was terribly bruised. He died an hour later.

SUCCESSFUL RECRUITING MEETING. A PALMERSTON NORTH EFFORT. PALMERSTON N., Dec. 13. A most enthusiastic meeting was held on Saturday night in aid of the recruiting movement. The Opera House was crowded; and thousands waited on the road outside. The programme consisted of patriotic songs and speeches inside the building, which were repeated to the thousands outside unable to gain admission. Captain Goldingham presided. Mr. Buiek, M.P., mr.de a great patriotic speech, in which he said it was far better to send yo\n,g men to the front, and if that not sufficient then "we old fellows would have to join the firing line." He was also annoyed when he read th«J remarks of the local Farmers' Union members that it was an inconvenient time to spare the boys, because they had cows to mils or some other «icuse. '•'Send the boys,' 'said Mr. Buiek, '"the women will do the milking if necessary, and it won't do them much harm." Fifty-five recruit* volunteered.

An old man, John McLeon, aged 60, dropped dead at Tewharu yesterday. He was employed as shepherd at McGregor's, Hikorangi. He had been medically attended to for heart trouble.

FLAX SWAMP FIRES.

CARTERTON, Dec. 14..

A fire swept over a portion of th« Mangahuia fi>x swamp, Longbush, where Toogood 's mill is working. The standing crop at present being cut was not touched, but the lax cut three years ago and growing again was badly scorched up.

BOLLARD WILL NOT RESIGN. MERELY A CANARD. HAMILTON, Dec. 14. Interviewed by a pressman to-day with reference to a published statement that he, as member for Rf.glon, intended resigning in favour of Mr. Fisher Mr. Bollard declared he knew nothing whatever of the matter. He had not been approached by the Government or anyone else. The thou-at never entered his head of resigning in favour of the late Minister for Marine. Even if, anyoae had proposed the question, then it would be one for his constituency to iefiifle.
