PRICES OF METALS

Copper, on the spot, is quoted at £56 7s 6d; at three months, £56 12s 6d.

Tin, on the spot, £149 10s to £150; at three months, £l47s 10s to £l4B, Lead, £l9. Spelter, £27. Bar silver i s quoted at 23d per oz, standard.

FROZEN MEAT MARKET,

Messrs. W. Weddel and Co. report as follows:

During the past week trade at Smithfleld has been very quiet for all descriptions of frozen meat. The supply of Dutch mutton and Irish beef continues to come in freely, and this is to some extent affecting the demand for the frozen article. Mutton —New Zealand mutton stocks are quite moderate, and up to 5 7-8 d per lb is obtainable for prime Cani terbury u/641b; the o/641b are sel'ing at l-£d per lb less. Best North Island mutton is quoted at siid per lb. Some .rather stale ewes are being sold at 5d to 5 l-8d per lb; fresh carcases, however, cannot be obtained a( under s,id to 5 3-Sd per lb. and ewes at 5 l-8d per lb. River Plate sheep seli steadily at 5 3-8 d to per lb. Lamb. —With regard to lamb, a considerable quantity of New Zealand carcases are in store. Canterbury brands u/361b are selling at G 7-Bd, and 36/421b at 6td to 6 5-8 d per lb. The o/421b are a slow sale at GJd to 6 3-Sd per lb. Prime North Island lambs realise about Id per lb less. Some new season’s Australian lambs have just arrived, and the quality of same has proved to be quite satisfactory. Good prices wore realised, Gid to Bjd per lb being obtained at Smithfleld. Silver Plate lambs are quoted at 5 5-8 d to GJd per lb. Beef. —The demand for beef has been quiet, especially for • hindquarters, which do not realise more than Gid per lb. Crops and forequarters, however, are firm at 5 5-Sd to s:jd per lb. Chilled beef has been pushed for sale, with the result that prices have gone down to well below the level of those ruling . for the frozen article. The market closes weak at 5Sd per lb for fores, and 5 5-8 d to C l-8d per lb for hindquarters.

WELLINGTON FRUIT MARKET. WELLINGTON, December 5. Messrs. Townsend and Paul, Ltd., report upon the Wellington market as follows; —There is a keen demand for all fruit and early produce. Present values: Tomatoes (short of requirements), choice 9d to Is per lb; gooseberries, improved demand, large choice, 4s to ss, medium 3 £ to 3s 9d per half case; supplies are wanted promptly. Strawberries, Auckland choice Is 2d to Is Bd, Nelson and local, choice, 8d to Is 3d per punnet; cherries, Nelson, choice dessert 9s to 11s, good 7s to Bd, others as per quality: red currants, choice, 7s to 8s per half case; cherry plums, green, 4s 6d to 5s 6d, coloured 6s to 7s 6d; bronze plums 5s 6d to 7s per half case; asparagus, choice large bundles, 6d to lOd, small bundles 4d to 6d each; green peas, local choice, Ss 6d to 13s per half sack. Nelson choice 7s to 10s per cental bag; lettuce, choice, 2s 6d to 5s per large case, medium quality at relative rates; new potatoes, choice white, 14s 6d to 1556 d per cwt; cucumbers, hothouse 5s to Cs per dozen; lemons, New Zealand choice 10s to 15s per case; eggs, fresh, Is 3d per dozen; poultry, all varieties in good demand at good prices; cauliflowers, choice, 6s; cabbages, choice, 3s to 4s; carrots, new choice, 8s to 10s per sack; marrows 3s to 9s per dozen, as per size and quality; rhubarb, choice, 6s to to Ss per dozen bundles; French beans, choice, 6d to 8d per lb.

THE POULTRY MARKET. There was a large entry of poultry for the first of the Christmas sales, held on Saturday. Nearly 3000 birds were penned, and realised good prices. Table chickens are still scarce, though hens, ducklings, and goslings are coming forward freely. Table chickens 5s 6d to 9s 2d, pullets 3s 6d to 8s Gd, hens 2s to 5s Gd, goslings 5s 6d to 9s Gd, ducks 3s Gd to Cs Gd, ducklings 2s Gd to 8s 3d, all per pair.

THE EGG MARKET. The egg market shows a good demand. Canterbury Egg Circle, first grade Is Id, seconds Is, stores Is per do^en.
