— 437 MEN PERISH. TOKIO, December 2. A mining disaster at Hokkaido is reported by which 437 miners perished. NEW YORK, December 2. A mass meeting of Germans and Irish at Chicago demanded the Government to prohibit all shipments of contraband war material' to Europe, except foodstuffs. The speakers declared that each shipment prolonged the war. An Englishman rose ami began singing God Save the King- Germans singing Irish and German national airs. The meeting attacked the Englishman, assaulted and ejected him. • The police saved him from serious injury. Congressman Bartholdt promised to induce Congress to take the desired action.
