PARIS IN WAR TIME
THE idiocy of hatred. The Cathedral of Rheims has been bombarded and is .completely destroyed. This masterpiece cf French sculpture has been shattered to pieces.
,ho 'j.teu'i icso window over the main ..ntvanrn, dating from the thirteenth century, is in ruins. The statue of the
' r ir’ii viscerating tlie main facade is badly broken. The kings, saints and angels which perpetuated the loyal and namv genius of the west have been nvfc’cncd in a storm if iron, and the grandoi.se ferest, which served as a framework of the marvellous build- • a*,v. U (ho prey cf the flames. This
ct cf savagery has been accomplished without military reason, with mini a cable fury, in all the idiocy or hatred. A man has been found in the world capable of giving such an order. In every part of the town houses have been gutted, the streets ares crew n with broken glass, paving stones are bespattered with blood-stains. Of seme buildings only the bare walls remain. It ’-s impossible to believe the stories one hears cf the tortures and cruelties the unfortunate inhabitants have undergone. Rheims itself is in flames. Refugees encumber the roads leading south, and about 400 residents ha\ e been killed.
GERMAN SARBARIT! SS. A friend cf mine, who has just returned from the historical city, now the vortex cf a desperate struggle between the allied forces and the German army, tcld mo that he was shocked by the sights he saw. “The situation.” said he, “ presented the saddest sight I ever saw. Everywhere was ruin and utter desolation. Many boys had their hands utt off, sc- that it was impossible for them to carry a gun. The sight of helpless little babies lying on the cold ground, and crying for proper nourishment, was enough to bring hot tears to everybody’s eyes.”
