WHEAT AND FLOUR. IMPORTANT STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER. EXPLOITING OF PUBLIC TO BE SUPPRESSED. HAWiERA, This Day. The follOAving statement has been made by the Prime Minister: It is now acknowledged in the southern districts of New Zealand that the Dominion is faced Avith a shortage both of wheat and flour, and that we shall have to depend upon outside sources for most of our supplies for at least two’ months. The commission set up under the Regulation of Trade and Commerce Act of last session Avill sit again in a few days to further consider the prices. In view of the difficulty that has arisen and also having regard to the fact that we have to import much of the wheat and flour that is required, I want those avlio may hold stocks of Avheat to understand that the Government avU! purchase at a fair price and that they will not be alloAved to keep supplies locked up to the detriment of the population. Supplies a.Te afloat at the present time from Australia and a further large consignment will be forthcoming in a feAv Aveeks from Canada. In the meantime I want to emphasise the point that the Government will not allow storing ctf wheat supplies for the purpose of exploiting the public.” BOATING FATALITY. AUCKLAND, This Day. A dinghey containing two men capsized at Bays water to-day. A young man named Michael Maloney employed by the Takapuna Tram Co. was drowned. His companion, P. Barton, had a narrow escape from a similar fate. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE NEAR HASTINGS. Aii eight-roomed building at Bridge Pah, near Hastings, owned and occupied by the Maori Agricultural College Trustees as a teacher’s residence Avas totally destroyed by fire last night. Very little furniture Avas saved. The insurances are not available. BREACH OF LEGISLATURE ACT. STRATFORD, This Day. At the Magistrate’s Court before Mr. Kendrick, S.M., Alan Alexander Cmh bertson, was charged Avith a breach of the Legislature Act : n that he did sign his name as a witness to a signature upon a claim for enrolment form Avithout having seen such signature Avritten by Hie claimant. Two other similar charges were laid against defendant. In one he pleaded guilty and not guilty, in others. After hearing evidence a line of £lO in each of the two charges was inflicted The informations Avere laid by the Registrar of Electors.
