A PLEA FOR PROHIBITION. Press Association —Copyright. SYDNEY, November 20. In the Senate, on the Defence .Bill, Mr. Turley moved an amendment -lor the restoration of wet canteens. He pointed out that the Belgians were the biggest, and the British the next biggest liquor consumers in the world. Receint events had demonstrated that. their soldiers were net " waster.s" Senator Pear'ce said he did not intend to accept the amendment. For many years he. !had advanced* wet. canteens, but practical experience of military camps bad entirely changed bis views. "Wet canteens are a clanger and an evil. Let us remove the danger and temptation in the path of the soldiers, and give them a opportunity to bring the greatest credit to Australia and themselves in their grim task in the bloodiest war of history." N.S.W. AND THE TOTALiSATOR. SYDNEY, November 20. The Cabinet discussed the totalisator prior to th eCaucus consideration on Tuesday. There was some diversj ity_.of opinion as to whether the "tote" should be given a monopoly or be conducted alongside the "bookies". It is anticipated that the Caucus will approve of the introduction of a private Bill in preference to a Government measure.
