SEVERE EARTHQUAKE

MORE THREATENING IN APPEARANCE THAN REALITY FELT ALL OVER THE NORTH AND SOUTH ISLAND. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, This Day. An earthquake, which seems to have been serious further north, found its way to Wellington at 7.46 last night in a modified form. There were two rather prolonged shocks which alarmed people in the churches and caused them to run out in some instances, but as usual the shake was more threatening in apately, the shake had an oscilliating mofell in one or two buildings but no damage is so far reported. BLENHEIM, This Day. A very severe and prolonged earthquake was felt here at 7.47 p.m. last night, followed by a second even more severe. The Buildings shook and several clocks stopped. The people were somewhat scared. MASTERTON, This Day. Two distinct shocks of earthquake, each lasting about 30 seconds, were felt here at 7:48 last night. Fortunately, the shake had an oscillating motion, and the usual sudden jerk was absent. No damage was done. WAIPAWA, This Day. A severe prolonged earthquake shock was felt here at 7.45 last night. INGLEWOOD, This Day. Two shocks of earthquake were felt here last night at 7.48. No damage was done . THAMES, This Day. There was a fairly severe earthquake here at 7.48 last night. HASTINGS, This Day. The shock was very severe, but, contrary to expectations, there was no structural damage to any buildings. There was a general exodus of people from the churches and homes and the people were thoroughly scared. NAPIER, This Day. The most severe shock of earthquake experienced since 1904 occured here at 7.48 last evening. It lasted fully a minute and a-half. The people fled from the churches and a number of women fainted. No serious damage is reported. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A slight earth tremor was felt at 7.48 last night, accompanied by a rumbling noise. It was preceded by a fairly sharp shock of earthquake lasting for half a minute. No damage was done. GISBORNE , This Day. A severe earthquake shock occurred here at 7.48 last nighl, emptying the churches of their congregations. Reports from the country districts state that number of chimneys are down, including several that have been re-built after the last shake, but no serious damage occured. Tokomaru Bay business premises had been prepared, having had the shelves covered with wire netting. Tologa Bay reports that the 'quake was more severe than on previous occasions, but, beyond cracked chimneys, no damage was done. A Tokomaru Bay message says that the tremor was felt more severely in some places than in others. Little damage was done. The direction appeared to be from east to west insteadof north to south, as previously. The duration was about 90 seconds. The hotel was the most unfortunate, losing a quantity of bottles and spirits, and the tanks again bursting. DUNEDIN, This Day. A slight earthquake shock was felt here at 7.50 last evening. A severe earthquake shock, lasting for fully half a minute, was experienced in Taihape at 7.45 p.m. last night. It was preceded by a slighter tremor which had a duration of a few seconds. The 'quake caused something approaching a panic in the churches, many people, thoroughly scared, rushing outside, while several were carried out hysterical or in a fainting condition. Buildings everywhere shook in an alarming manner, and a great number of residents ran out of their homes. As far as can be gathered no damage of any consequence was done in Taihape. At Matarca. Pohonui, and other centres several chimneys were shaken down, and others badly cracked. A big landslide occurred by the Hautapu Stream in the vicinity of Mr. Parker's slaughterhouse.
