Replying to criticism during the debate Mr. Asquith said that Lord Kitchener had drawn up a scheme lor increasing the pay of junior officers, which the Treasury were considering. General French was freely utilising his powers to promote non-coms, and privates to commissions for gallantry and services in the field. Britain was not a fl ' ec ‘T ent 111 U 9 matter of war correspondents and was obliged to regulate proceedings by the wish of the Allies who had the chief share of the fighting.
