BURGLARY AT WAIHI.
TWO RESIDENTS SANDBAGGED. WAIHI, Yesterday. A da ring attehipY at robbery with violence took place at an early' hour on Friday morning at Gladstone House, in Kenny Street, -which is conducted as a boarding-house by Mrs. Freeman and her husband. It appears that both the latter were attacked whilst asleep by aman armed -with what had the appearance of a small sandbag in the shape of a tennis ball attached to a short stick. It would seem that the inruder's intention was to dispose of any likely resistance in the first instance by rendering the oceiipants of the room insensible by attacking iht-m with the sandbag, previous to. making a search fcr valuables. Mr. Fioeman was the first to to receive their atention in this manner, tie was struck a blow on the of the head which rendered him -insensible for some time, and oblivious to all that happened until he was Acquainted with the course of events, later on by his wife. Mrs. Freeman was sandbagged, and had dne of her-ears- injured, but did not lose conaeiousqesa. She raised an alarm, sa.d her assailant decamped through the. bedroom window. Mrs. Freeman $M not see the man's face but she jtfttieed that in addition to the sandbag* he also carried a lantern. M>. Freeman bears a mark on the side if his head as tke result of th<j blow he received. ./ It is understood, that.no other ww/ra in the house was visited. ,■ Mr. Freemaa \&& a sum of £SO Concealed under fc-fs pillow.
