WARNING OF ROBBERY
POLICE ARREST TWO MEN ESCAPE AT STATION DOOR Rre** A node r ii/Ti WELLINGTON, Friday. Two men under arrest, and tinder the escort of a constable, made a racier vay of the Taranaki Street police station about 10 JS0 p.m. last evening. A stern chase ensued, but the men disappeared under cover of darkness. Mr. B. Sutherland, of Karori. owner of the Self Help Grocery Stores, shortly after 10 p.m, received a telephone call from a person unknown, who intimated that the Courtenay Place store would be broken into in the following hour. On receiving the information, Mr. Sutherland's son immediately informed the police, and went into town in his car. In the meantime, the manager of the shop bod been communicated with, and he, in company with Mr. Sutherland. j-un., and a police constable, made an inspection of the premises. There appeared to be no signs of any intruders, but while a further inspection was being made footsteps were heard in a iano behind the store, to which access is gained from Tory StreetThree men were seen to be there, and although they began to run away when they were aware that their presence was noticed, the constable was well on the alert, and secured two of them. Tee third escaped. The two men were not deprived of their liberty for long, however, for at a second and themselves from the constable’s power, when almost at the police station T t was stated this evening that the wanted men had not been recaptured. One explanation of the telephone call that a member of a gang of thieves may have turned traitor on his friends, and out of spite or malice decided to inform Mr. Sutherland of the plans.
