Y.M.C.A. FINANCES

GREAT IMPROVEMENT NOTED BY MR. C. H. FURNESS A considerable improvement in the finances of the Young Men’s Christian Association was announced yesterday afternoon by Mr. C. H. Furness, principal director, when speaking- at the opening of the spring fair at the "i .M.C.A. In pointing out that the purpose of the spring fair was to aid the general funds of the institution, Mr. Furness mentioned that, at the latest meeting of the directors, the treasurer, Mr. R. I-I. Horsley, had reported that, with an effort, the financial position would be sound at the end of the year of activities. ‘‘l tell you this because it is a long time since the Y.M.C.A. has been able to balance its budget," added Mr. Furness. "But I must lay stress on the use of the words ‘with an effort’ by the treasurer.” Mr. Furness thanked the women who were assisting at the fair. He remarked that it was his opinion that the general work of the Y.M.C.A. had not progressed better than at the present time. This was largely due to the work of the general secretary, Mr. Vernon T. Drew; the physical instructor, Mr. F. Rogers; the membership secretary, Mr. D. Miller; and the boys’ work director, Mr. G. W. Adair, in their administrative capacities. At the moment the directors were considering extending the activities of the Y.M.C.A. still further. A proposal was on foot to undertake Y.M.C.A. work in the suburbs, but the directors had not yet authorised that development, though it was probable they would do so. All the stalls at the spring fair were busily engaged yesterday afternoon and last evening. The fair is continuing until this evening. Homemade goods, handwork, clothing, and household supplies were sold a*t some of the stalls. The young men’s division, and the fotoball and cricket clubs, also had stalls. - Lady Richardson was present, and had charge of the produce stall, assisted by Mrs. Wainwright, Mrs. Black, and Miss M. Rhodes. Other stallholders were: Work stall, Mrs. Garratt, Mrs. West, Mrs. Reston, Mrs. Drew, and Mrs. Eames; flower stall. Mrs. Bolitho, Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Kitchener, and Mrs. Ormiston; young men’s stall. Miss Lochner, Mr. J. Miller and Mr. F. Raton; confectionery stall, Mrs. Coates: chocolate box stall, Mrs. Miller; plain sewing stall, Mrs. Wren and Mrs. Ball; cake stall, Mrs. Adair and Miss Kent: Betty Lou stall.
