“THE FIRST MAYOR”
ONE TREE HILL CEREMONY INSIGNIA OF OFFICE . The first Mayor of the Borough of One Tree Hill, Mr. J. S. Hardwicke. | was invested with the insignia of his | office at a meeting of the Borough I Council last evening. The ceremony was performed by the Deputy -Mayor, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, who, before presenting the Mayor with the mayoral chain, exhorted him to regard it as an emblem of the confidence reposed in him as first citizen of the borough, rather than as a mere ornament. The Mayor assured the councillors | that he would exert his best efTorts in the interests of the borough while holding the chain. A voucher for €2Bl 1:s 2d was received from the Public V.'orks Department, being the borough’s first allocation from the petrol-tax. The sunt covers the quarter which ended on June 30 last. The town clerk. Mr. A. Leese. pointed out that the borough’s share of the petrol-tax next year should not be less than .€1,400. Permission was given W. J. Wheeler and Sons to increase the speed of their buses to 23 miles an hour. The building inspector reported that since August 2S building permits had been issued to the value of €534 10s. The total value of permits issued since the beginning of the year is €27.597 3s. Mr. E. V. Blake, consulting engineer, attended and conferred with the council on various points of policy in con- : nection with the proposed road imi provemont scheme. He was instructed ; to continue preparing detailed plans.
