FLOODED COALMINE
EFFECT UPON TRADE HIKURANGI STILL IDLE From Oicr Own Correspondent WIIANGAEEI, Wednesday. The serious effect which the inactivity of the Hikurangi Coal Company’s mine is having upon the trade of this district was indicated at the monthly meeting of the Harbour Board today A return of shipping showed that last month 1,972 tons of coal were imported, and only 292 tons carried away by sea. For the first time since its acquisition from the Railways liepartmont, the Onerahi wharf showed a loss, the amount being £32. Some criticism lias been levelled at the delay in securing the big pump from Muir’s Reef, promised by the Government. It appears that eight miles of road leading to where the machinery lies in a gully at Muirs mine has been neglected for the past two years, .and the removal of slips has occupied a fortnight. A gang of men is now employed removing the pump, which is expected at Hikurangi in about ten days’ time. Dewatering the mine is anticipated to take about eight weeks, and if all goes well, the mine will resume its noinial output at Christmas.
