THE AMATEURS

Tlie record for the number ot" entries on the new Mount Roskill circuit was again shattered last Saturday, when under ideal weather conditions, both races staged by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club, drew fields of 13 juniors and 27 seniors. The handicaps were over one lap for the juniors and a 25mile’ heat for the older pedallers. Times were not out of the ordinary, owing to a southerly wind over the early stages of each circuit. Never-’ theless some good lapping was witnessed.

•T. Bates improved on his previous week’s performance to gain the major portion of the youngsters’ prize. This lad took no risks of being downed in a tight finish, but passed all the other competitors, to score comfortablj’ from his co-marker.

As with the winner, rf. Cogan was not unduly bustled to gain his placing, for he downed the rest of his field just as easily as he was beaten. With two wins and a second at Mangere last season, this rider has not taken as kindly, so far, to the new circuit. Vic Gordon could not overtake the 15s handicap allotted to A. Robinson. The former lost 9s over the five miles, thus losing time honours by this margin. It was not a disappointed crowd who cheered W. Borland to victory in the senior tussle. It was indeed time this cyclist placed a win to his credit, as he has not had this honour in a handicap even.t during the five years he has contested in the club’s weekly carnivals, Now he has had some encouragement, IV.B. may in the near future again fill this role. Another plodder managed to get into the limelight. This was E. Andrews. who gained second placing. The finishing effort put in by this rider was a credit, and a true indication of his real form. In downing his co-marker, R. Boston, by half a length, Ernie showed he was still a force to be reckoned with. Tho most consistent performer this season is undoubtedly R. Easton, with six placings to his credit. His’ third last Saturday gives him a total of 16 points for the Kohn Cup, placing him at dhe head of the ladder. Once more J. Whitten gained fastest time honours. After his spell. Whitten is fast regaining his old form. Though well away from the winner at the finish, “Jerry” had no difficulty in annexing the premier position. It looks as if this solid pedaller is to make a bold bid for the championship.
