Takanini Hopes For Avondale

FAVOURED CANDIDATES ROSSHIRE-PRINCE OF ORANGE Special to THE SUN TAKANINI, Today. The following trainers from this district Will be represented by these candidates at Avondale on Saturday: E. Pope.—Prince of Orange. Rosshire. Royal Artist and Rosoric. C. Morse.—Ring’s Speech and Gay Cavalier. I’. Callahcr. —Envoy. J. T. Jamieson. —Dominican. ytf . Go3comb. —White W ings certain runner unless conditions are right). The Maiden Thero is a fairly big field in the Maiden Handicap and among those that are classed as promising is Rosshire. Rosshire, by Catmint —Lady Penury, came into prominence when he ran second to Coon Song at Trentham two, months ago and on the concluding day of that meeting he ran Gowanlea to a nose in the Novice Handicap, in which event he was considered very unlucky. After his failure at the Pakuranga meeting he lost a few admirers, but if form is to be considered there are not many with credentials as good as this three-year-old- On his latest track work he should command a good deal of respect in this event and local admirers are expecting a good effort from him- Rosshire will also face the starter in the Guineas on Monday. The Grey Dominican’s first and only effort was when he just failed to beat Pennyplain in the Ladies’ Bracelet at the recent Pakuranga meeting. The Grey Monk gelding has been showing signs of soreness after recent gallops, but this is not considered serious enough to keep him ! from facing the starter on Saturday. | Perhaps he may not appeal as much as some others, but on his preparation he will certainly be ready to run a solid race. Gay Cavalier, by Chesterfield out of an Elysian mare, will be making his debut, and although he is expected to acquit himself creditably his connections are not sanguine of his chances of collecting prize money. The race should prove beneficial on the score of education and after a race or two he may be worth keeping an eye on. Tamarado, by Silverado —Tamahine. is in the paddock as a result of soreness which developed after ricking herself. An attempt to get her to the post has been unsuccessful and there is little likelihood of her racing at the meeting. May Race On Second Day St. Ames failed to accept in the Kingsland Hurdles, in which event he had what may be termed a pretty good chance. The second day may be his mission and should such be the case be will be worth a saver, as he has recent form over fences, running first and second at the recent Poverty Bay meeting. In considering Prince of Orange’s chance in the Avondale Cup one can predict, a good effort under any conditions. But he docs not appeal so well as in the Henderson Handicap, in which he is fairly well treated. He will in all probability tackle the Henderson Handicap Prince of Orange is in great condition and will prove a source of annoyance to his opponents. Avondale Stakes Takanini is expected to hold its own in the Avondale Stakes, with Royal Artist and Roseric, and providing no champions are concealed in the event, this opinion should not be far out. These Leighton juveniles have done so well in E. Pope’s car© and are so forward that local followers will be very disappointed if they fail to show up. Roseric appeals most, but Royal Artist looks as though his condition will carry him through. As they will bo bracketed on the machine these youngsters are sure to have an army of followers. Envoy and King’s Speech This pair are engaged in the Henderson Handicap and in reviewing their prospects Envoy appeals most King’s Speech’s outing at Pakuranga was productive of a good effort, but he is not considered anywhere near his best yet Envoy has been working very well and his chance is far from being a hopeless one. The Absurd—Bronze gelding won three times last season and was second twice in nine starts. Ho is useful when right and may be seen to advantage very soon.

CIMABUE’S TROUBLE

BLEEDING ATTACK SPRINTER “LOOKS WELL” It was cabled last week from Sydnev that the Trentham sprinter Cimabue, had broken down. A few days afterward a Svdnev writer said that Cimabue. which suffered from a bleeding attack yesterday. looked well enough this morning (September 11) as he trotted on the left-handed going in the centre of the course at Randwick. It was unfortunate for his trainer. H- B. Lorigan, that the Leighton gelding should have had the mishap, as he appeared to be as well as at any previous stage of his career.
