GROCERIES FOR DISTRESSED
DISTRIBUTION OF ORDERS The method of distributing among firms, orders for groceries for families receiving relief, is to be considered by the relief committee of the Auckland Hospital Board, as a result of a letter from the Master Grocers’ Association. When the secretary reported to the board meeting yesterday afternoon that he had advised the Master Grocers’ Association that orders were allotted on the basis of quality, price and convenience, the Rev. W. Wood confessed that he was perturbed to find that the association had been answered without reference to the committee. He thought that such an important matter should have been presented to the committee, as the board was paying out- huge sums to certain firms, and it wanted to be sure it was done as fairly as possible. As trustees the board should be careful to safeguard Itself against any suggestion of favouritism. The chairman. Mr. W. Wallace, stated that the circumstances had changed entirely from the time when orders were first issued. Smaller grocers, in areas where people receiving relief were living all round, now considered they should have a share of the orders.
