176 POLLING PLACES

One hundred and seventy-six polling places have been gazetted for the byelection on October 8 in the Western Maori constituency, caused by the death of Sir Maui Pomare. The electorate extends from Auckland, Coromandel and Tauranga, through Waikato and King Country as far east as Taupo. down the west coast, embracing Taranaki, as far as Wellington. The Chatham Islands are included in the electorate, because the Maori inhabitants of the group are members of the Ngati-Tama and the Ngati-Mutunga tribes, of Taranaki. Mr. G. P. Shepherd, of the Native Department at Wellington, is the returning officer at the election.
