ST. JAMES
“SONG 0’ MY HEART” In “Song: o’ My Heart,” at the St. James Theatre, John McCormack sings as beautifully as ever, and the movietone records his voice with lifelike quality. The story is human, surprisingly fresh and interesting. The cast, from lovely Maureen O’Sullivan down to the lowliest extra, does his or her bit with unaffected simplicity and dramatic power. McCormack sings his songs, 11 of them, and performs higi role with ease. In fact, the way that the songs are worked into the story is so logical, one goes away with the thought of a beautiful romance fulfilled, enhanced logically by the vocal beauty of the world’s favourite tenor. Some of the songs are old favourites, unforgettable ballads which most of us have heard him sing on his concert tours. But there are a number of new lyrics, a few operatic arias bea»rd in a concert sequence which will appeal because of McCormack’s superb, soulful rendition. The supporting talkies add to the enjoyment of the evening.
