SPRING FLOWER SHOWS
HUNTLY’S RECORD DISPLAY PRINCIPAL PRIZEWINNERS From Our Own Correspondent lIUNTLY, Tuesday. The annual spring show of the Iluntly Horticultural Society was held yesterday, and was a record both in entries and quality of blooms displayed. A revelation to local daffodil growers was the exhibit of Mr. J. G. YVeightman, of Feilding, and it is safe to say no better display has been seen in the province, while that of Messrs. D. Hay and Sons, also not for competition, was favourably commented upon. A special exhibit of basketware from the Blind Institute, which was in charge of Mrs. G. Fraser and Miss Burden, was greatly admired, while added interest to the show was lent by the collection of war trophies belonging to Mrs. George Fraser. Mr. James B. Harris, patron. Mr. Thomas Cox, president, and a strong committee with Miss H. Hodgson as secretary and Mr. Fred Harris as assistant, left no stone unturned to ensure the comforts of patrons. HAMILTON EXHIBITS “BEST YET” SAYS JUDGE From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Tuesday. The Hamilton Horticultural Society's spring show was opened today. According to the judge, Mr. J. G. Weightman, of Feilding. the display is the best yet, tlic quality of blooms being all the more remarkable in view of the changeable weather and frosts existent in the district -in the past few weeks. Entries constituted a record and were received from variotis centres other than Hamilton, including Auckland, Thames, Huntly, Cambridge and To Awamutu. Mr. G. A. Shaw’s large cup leedsii, “Margaret Sharpe." was adjudged the champion bulb of the show. The same exhibitor carried off the honours with a magnificent medio coronati, “Militant." Tlie champion barri went to Mr. W. Danby, of Thames, with “Queen of Hearts." The judge stated that in the daffodil section it was difficult to separate the prize-winners. He gave it as his opinion that the show was the best arranged at which he had judged in New Zealand. Besides members of the narcissi family, there is a wonderful display of freesias, polyanthus, Iceland poppies and other cut flowers. Some very artistic effects have been secured in the decorated classes. The general arrangement of the show reflects great credit on the secretary. Miss P. C. Von Sturmer, the president, Mr. C. L. Mac Diarmid, and the committee.
