Heavy Course At Te Rapa
Yesterday’s Work CANDIDATES FOR AVONDALE Special to THE SUN HAMILTON, Tuesday. The going was heavy at Te Rapa this morning:. The weather was fine and in'view of the approaching spring fixture* more than ordinary interest attached to the work of track attendants out this morning. The poles were out about 45ft from the rails and work was restricted to the course proper. Cilena Bay and Ilolly Holm will both have their first racing in the present term at the Waikato meetings. They are on the improve and should be in good nick when the time approaches for their contemplated engagements. Pagan ell i went five furlongs in 1.11 2-5. The track was heavy and the Lord Quex gelding did not hit out too freely as a result. lie will have his first outing of the season in the Flying Stakes at Avondale on Saturday. This member of M. Carroll’s string has not raced for some months and will not be at the top of his form. To Race on Monday The Illumination—Lady Kairua twoyear filly had ltoyal Visitor as a companion over half a mile in 55sec. She is entered for the Nursery Handicap on the second day at Avondale and will be having her first outing. Royal Visitor will be having his first, trial over hurdles at Avondale. The Lucullus gelding gave a disappointing exhibition on the flat at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. By Lucullus from Sports Queen he certainly has the benefit of jumping blood on both sides of his pedigree. lie has been showing promise in his schooling. Beau Irish, a three-year-old gelding by Beaufort from Lady Sindhia, is engaged in the Maiden Plate at Avondale. He shows speed, but is hardly seasoned enough to run the seven furlongs. This morning he was allotted a half-mile task which he covered in 5G 3-5. Next at Ellerslie Star Comet, who was associated with Beau Irish in his effort, has no immediate engagements and will race over hurdles at Auckland next month. He is working along nicely. He has had no racing since the Auckland Easter meeting, when he won a double over the battens. Pompeius, who ran second to High Pitch in the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellerslie last month. rather surprised those who were conversant with his work on the training tracks. The Lucullus gelding will have his next racing at the Auckland meeting. He joined with Sun well over a six-furlong task in 1.28. Pompeius will continue in handicap events for the present, at any rate. Sunwell, a three-year-old by Australian Sun from Rosewell, is coming on well. He is a good stamp of galloper. Tradesman was restricted to easy exercise on the plough. The Raceful gelding is entered in the mile hack at Avondale on Saturday. As a two-year-old last season he won a couple of races at Paeroa. The Saturday journey may prove a little too far for him. Likes the Course Stonehenge, who with Mervette covered the six furlongs in 1.24*, is down to contest the Maiden Handicap at .Avondale on Saturday. One of A. Tinker’s charges, the Fcramorz gelding
raced fairly well in the autumn, when lie showed up on this course. The distance should not trouble him. The Sun is another of the Te Rapa' contingent that wil be making the trip to Avondale. The Sun finished fourth at the Pakuranga fixture and providing he begins well on Saturday he should be in the picture, as he is pretty forward. Arch Eagle, who will be ridden by H. Gray, will have some followers on the opening day at Avondale. Tire Archiestown hack is a solid customer, but lack of beginning qualities is not in his favour. Gray, however, may be able to remedy this in his coming start.
