MONEY FOR CLINICS

MAINTAINING BUILDINGS Dental clinics which occupy old classrooms, additions to school buildings, or separate buildings in the grounds should be maintained by the board from its school building maintenance fund. This was stated in a memorandum received by the Auckland Education Board from the department this morning. Tho chairman, Mr. A. Burns, considered that the work should be done by the Health Department. which was using the buildings. It did not appear light that the Education Department should require the board to do this work from a grant which had just been reduced by £4OO a month. The position has been met in Matamata by the committee asking for a donation of one shilling from every child receiving attention, stated Mr. E. G. Banks. This would give a sufficient sum yearly to keep tho building m good- order, which was all the responsibility on the board. “That is certainly against the regulations,” said Mr. J. Patterson. "No charge is allowed to be made for the dental service, which must be given tree by the Health Department.” ‘ In some cases school committees ask for a donation of one penny from the children for every service given. This sum covers the cost of laundry work. “It is only a small amount, but is entirely wrong in principle,” commented Mr. Burns. No action is to be taken.
