SUBSIDY WITHHELD
BALANCE OF SCHOOL GRANT LOSS WILL FALL ON BOARD A delay of three years in the spending of £3l 14s, the balance of a subsidy given' by the Education Department on work done in the Pukckohe School grounds, has resulted tn the department refusing to authorise the payment of this amount. The loss will fail on the Auckland Education Board, which has already passed on this sum to the committee. A letter received at a meeting of the board this morning stated that a voucher for the amount was forwarded by the department to the Treasury Department for payment, but that the Minister of Finance declined to authorise this as he held the £3l 14s should have been expended when the remainder of the work was done in 1927. Mi*. J. Patterson said that between £1.600 and £I,BOO had been received by the Pukekohe School Committee for the work, but, considering that it was not advisable to spend all the money at once, the committee decided to leave the amount under discussion unexpended for the time being. This sum had now been used and payment made by the board. “The money was spent by us in good faith and should be made good by the department.” said Mr. A. Burns, chairman. He suggested that the board should restate its case to the department. Further action is to be urged on the department.
