HOME IMPROVEMENTS

PEOPLE PREPARED TO SPEND MONEY NEW SOCIETY'S EFFORTS Although the office has been open only a day and a-half, applications have been received by the Home Modernising Society from 22 people, who are prepared to spend money in carrying out improvements to their homes. The society has been promoted by prominent public, professional and business men for the purpose of facilitating the arrangements of people desiring to carry out improvements or modernise their homes, and at the same time provide needed employment for many skilled workers in Auckland. This laudable enterprise has been made possible by subscriptions received from many publicspirited citizens and the services of the organisation to applicants are entirely gratuitous. The services of the society's architect, Mr. L. E. Brooker, are already being utilised. S\m-porches, new bathrooms, repainting and extra rooms figure largely in the applications received. The value of the work proposed ranges from £lO to £SOO-; from small papering work to complete modernising, Several lots of specifications will soon be ready and work on the first job will be commenced very shortly. Many of tbs applicants stated tl-.at had they not been prompted by the society's announcement they would have continued to let the work stand over until other times. Several also stated that the announcement had given them an idea in regard to improving their homes. It is expected that many people wishing to improve their homes, and also their market value before offering them for sale will also avail themselves of this convenient method of setting about the work. At present, however, most of the applications have been received from people desirous of improving their own homes for their own comfort. If a satisfactory measure of success attends the society's efforts, it is expected that additional employment will be provided for many of those engaged in the building and allied trades. With keen competition existing in most trades, and with abundant skilled labour available, it is considered that the present time is most suitable for carrying out this type of work.
