TWO YEARS’ PROBATION
YOUNG MAN GIVEN CHANCE Stating that the crimes had been j committed by the prisoner during a drinking bout, Mr. Justice Herdman, in the Supreme Court today admitted Reginald David Lewis, 26, to probation for two years for offences of forgery and false pretences. As conditions of his release, Lewis was ordered to take out a prohibition order and make restitution within six months of £29 for goods he obtained, and to pay £4 for the costs of the prosecution. Mr. Ray stated that the offences committed by Lewis were the result of utter foolishness. In passing sentence, his Honour said that he had considered the Probation Officer's report, and it appeared that Lewis had previously borne a good character. The prisoner had committed a stupid crime by forging a cheque, cashing it, and obtaining goods, but his Honour thought that if given another chance. Lew's might possibly lead a respectable life.
