“SMITHY” STARTS SOON FOR AUSTRALIA MAY ATTEMPT RECORD Reed. 10.10 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. Wing-Commander Kiugsford Smith is to begin a solo flight from Heston airdrome, England, to Australia in about 10 days. He will use an Avian single-seater airplane which has been christened Southern Cross Junior. A message from London says Kiugsford Smith visited Manchester to inspect the machine. He said he may use the machine in an attempt to break Bert Hinkler’s record, but this depends on his health. His doctor at present will not hear of his attempt to fly to Australia.
