GARAGE EMPLOYEE WENT JOY-RIDING ADMITTED TO PROBATION To get petrol to go joy-riding with friends, Ernest William Jupp, a garage mechanic, aged 17, stole 100 gallons from hi 3 employer, who kept a petrol station. Through Mr. J. S. Dickson, Jupp pleaded guilty, at the Police Court today, when he came up for sentence, to stealing two lots of benzine, of a total value of £lO, the property of Cyril Parker, on or about July 15. Chief-Detective Hammond said that accused had been employed as an attendant at the garage, and Mr. Parker, the proprietor had found that the meter had been interfered with in one case. A check with the meters and the cash taken disclosed a shortage of more than 2,000 gallons. “Accused has never been in trouble before,” said the chief-detective. Mr. Dickson said his client had pleaded guilty to the theft of 100 gallons. He was only a boy and, liad he been a year younger, would have been dealt with by the Children's Court. WENT “JOY-RIDING” “He has a motor-ear, and has been joy-riding with friends,” said counsel. ‘‘His father will keep a strict watch on his movements in the future. Tn this case probation would be effective, especially as Jupp has been in gaol for several days. His employer is so satisfied with his efficiency that ite is prpared to take him back, despite this recent lapse. If his licence to drive is cancelled he will lose his position as he is a bound apprentice.” Mr. W. J. Campbell, probation ofifeer, supported counsel's application for probation, “There appears to have been some slackness in the garage.” he said. “The accused’s character has previously been excel--1 Mr. W.
