MY GARDEN

I have a garden, fair to see. Where pansies grow and fairies play, Where birds are singing in the tree. Where sunbeams dance the live-long day; And when the sun long since has set, The birds sing in my garden yet. I plant sometimes a lily fair, And then sit down and watch it grow; How glad I am to see it there Only the birds and fairies know . . . But small seeds in a border sown To myself alone are known. I have a garden, fair and bright. Wherein I sit alone for days. And, as I sit, a flower of light Unfolds its sweetness to my gaze . . . I know that I shall never part. With the garden in my heart. —Gloria Rawlinson, aged 11.
