W.C.T.U. CONVENTION

SATISFACTORY PROGRESS MADE Gratification at the satisfactory progress made was expressed at the closing session of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union convention on Thursday. Mrs. M. Richards was elected president for the ensuing year. Thanks were expressed to the Mount Albert W.C.T.U. for its hospitality to delegates to the convention. On Wednesday evening delegates witnessed the conduct of a model L.T.L. meeting, in which official positions were occupied by children ranging from eight to 15 years. The children were superintended by Mrs. Kasper and Miss Fyfe. KING COUNTRY JOTTINGS A surprise visit was paid to the home of Mrs. D. McKay by the women of the Ohura Plunket subbranch. The president, Mrs. H. Seerup, made Mrs. McKay a presentation on behalf of the branch', and wished her success and happiness in her new home at New Plymouth. The Young People’s Club held a delightful afternoon at the residence of Mrs. T. U. Crocker, Kaitieke. The attendance included many mothers who had been invited by the club. Games and sports were carried out, and afternoon tea was provided by the promoters. A dance in aid of the Taumarunui Boys’ Band was successfully held at Taringamotu. The Misses Ginders gave delightful exhibitions of duo and solo dancing. Superintendent S. Till called at Taumarunui on his way to Auckland, and was the guest at a gathering of the local police, who took the opportunity to bid farewell to their superior officer. A dance organised by the combined branches of the Mokauiti, Waimiha. Mapiu and Tangitu sub-branches of the Farmers’ Union was held at Waimiha. Mesdames Barnett and Wilson gave vocal items. At a most successful fancy dress dance at Te Whakarae the following prizes were won:—Best dresses: Miss Carswell, Queen of the Harem; Mr. A. Uden, Papson; most original, Airs. Bandelow, Topsy; Mr. W. Woolston, Ala ori Alaid.
