FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE
REMOVAL OF RESTRICTIONS A. AND P. ASSN. VIEWS Objection was raised at a meeting of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association Council yesterday afternoon, to a proposal from the Department of Agriculture for an opinion on the withdrawal of laws prohibiting the importing of cattle from Great Britain. A communication from the department contained the following resolution : “The Board of Agriculture feels the time will soon be opportune for the removal of the embargo on the importation into New Zealand of livestock from Great Britain, and it considers that if Great Britain remains free from foot-and-mouth disease until the end of the present year, stock from that country should be allowed to be imported into the Dominion, subject to reasonable precautions.” ■The communication described the precautions taken by the British department to prevent the exporting of infected cattle and pointed out that New Zealand was now the only country in the Empire which still prohibited the importation of stock from Great Britain. Mr. J. P. Kalaugher proposed that the association pass a resolution that there be no weakening in the quarantine regulations in regard to foot-and-mouth disease. “We should protest vigorously against any change,” he said. . ~ , It was decided that it. would be better to have no discussion and the question was referred to a subcommittee.
