OYSTER SEASON CLOSES
QUALITY UP TO STANDARD The oyster-picking season will probably end on Monday, the Government depot closing at the end of the week. Picking began this year on June 26, amid complaints from some that the quality of oysters was not what it used to be. Both quality and supply did improve iater in the season and was generally pronounced quite satisfactory. Public demand was good until during the past fortnight, when the usual falling-off was noted, and there are now not many buyers at even the present rate of Sd a dozen for unopened oj'sters and Is a dozen for opened. The season last year extended until October 11, but it had been nearly a month later in starting, dealers taking their first delivery on July IS. The two seasons have thus actually been of approximately the same length.
