Joy Prices on Wanganui Opening Day

Count Palatine’s Big Surprise WITH four winners at double figures—two of them paying dividends of over a quarter of u century—it wax not surprising that backers received all the worst of it in tlieir duel with the tot alisator. Cylinder, a hot favourite, won the Guineas very easily. Count Palatine won the principal handicap, the Marangai. returning nearly a third of a. century to hiss-few supporters, while Silvermine just about ran into double figures when he led the sprint field home. Mister Gamp won the Hurdles nicely, but a couple of: pounds of lead was lost when Ihc gelding jumped the lasi fence and, of course, there was nothing to do but rub the horse out. The meeting will conclude tomorrow, when it is anticipated that investors will see their operations attended with much more success than on the opening day.

Tlio Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring I meeting opened today in glorious . weather. The attendance was fair. I owing to the fact that complimentary I tickets were entirely suspended. The I gate takings were about the same as last year. The totalisator handled £15,658, against £20,035 I Os. a de--1 crease of £4,377. The track was in good order and fast. Outsiders prevailed in several events, backers having a disastrous day, three winners returning dividends aggregating more than £7O, while others ! were also near double figures. After the Okehu Hurdles Mister Gamp’s rider weighed in 21b short, having dropped some lead at the last hurdle. Mister Gamp, paying a good price, was disqualified, and first dividened went to Avro. who had been ! beaten by half a head. | M. J. Pine, rider of Melissa in the i Seafield Handicap, was suspended for the remainder of the meeting for Maiden Plate I Scratcliings reduced the field for the Maiden. Vandyke £296. was favourite. having the call over Jayson £196. Tar Baby £152 and Baskier £lO9. Vandyke and Sir Mercury gave a lot of trouble at the tapes, causing a : lengthy delay. Finally the favourite

was sent to the outside. When the barrier went up he got away well, though Baskier, Jayson and Biflex | showed the way over the early stages, | Vandyke coming along on the outside of a strung-out field. At the four | furlongs Baskier and Jayson were just ahead of Vandyke, Biflex, Acco and Tar Baby. The order was somewhat similar across the top, with Jlinewai | running up to the leaders, Laconic also j moving up. Once straightened up Vandyke asserted himself and came on to win very nicely by two lengths from ! Jayson, with Baskier half a length ; away. Next to finish were Laconic, Hinewai, Tar Baby, Biflex, Guerestcr. Cessation and Pandia. Okehu Hurdles Backers went solidly for Make Up £407 and Luminary £389 in the Okehu Hurdles, Nukumai £3lB also being supported. Avro £l9l, received the major portion of the stake after Mister Gamp had won and had been disqualified for weighing in short. At the first hurdle Luminary lost his rider, and Make Up showed the way to Royal Acre and Avro, with a gap back to Shining Armour and Tall Timber. Past the stands the first time Make Up, Royal Acre and Avro were five lengths ahead of Nukumai, Shining Armour and Tall Timber, with Opa and Mister Gamp last. Mister j Gamp ran round the field going to the I six furlongs, and when they entered ! llie back stretch he was up with Royal j Acre and Make Up, while Avro, NukuRoyal Acre and Make Up showed the way across the top four lengths ahead of Avro, with Mister Gamp next 2Avro ran t.-. the* front at the last hurdle, which he jumped just ahead of j Royal Acre and Make Up, but in the run to the judge Mister Gamp came | with a great rattle on the rails, to j pass the post a head in front of Avro. i Two lengths back came Royal Acre, | clear of Make Up. while Nukumai, j Opa and Tall Timber were next in j order. Putiki Hack In the Putiki Hack Handicap, The Warden £415. and Spearopa £333, were preferred to Adventus £260, the winner turning up in Joyspear £77. Joyspear and Annoyer were first out of the straight, but when they entered the back stretch Kahikatoa, Joyspear, Callamart, Great Lady, Pedestal, Annoyer, and The Warden were racing in that order. Annoyer got sent back and half a mile from home the order of the leaders was little changed. Joyspear and Kahikatoa were first to turn for home, being followed by Grand Jury and Little Won-

dcr, with Shortly coming fast. Joyspear held on well in the run home, to win by three-quarters of a length, with heads separating Shortly, Grand Jury and Little Wonder, with Kahikatoa another head away. Callamart and Spearopa were next to finish. Seafield Handicap Ferndon was favourite for the Seafield Handicap, being entrusted with £515, while Cadland £291, and Hopwood £233, carried more than Melissa £197. Royal Game showed out from the tapes ahead of Melissa, Te Atiawa, and Fernden. but got chopped back as they ran for the back stretch, where Te Atiawa, Fernden, and Melissa were well clear of Royal Game, Hopwood, Paiko, Cadland, and Duellona. At the three furlongs Te Atiawa and Fernden were just ahead of Melissa and Duellona, with Cadland and Broad Acre next. The order was maintained across the top, and into the straight, i At the distance Fernden was in trouble j and Melissa came away to win by two lengths from Te Atiawa, who was a length and a-half in front of Fernden. Broad Acre was fourth, and Cadland. Paiko. Grecian, and Royal Game followed. The Guineas I s Huntingdon was the one defection

from the Guineas field, in which Cylinder was made a screaming favourite, being entrusted with £654, while Lineage £247) and Arisuss (£178) were others slightly fancied. They got away to a good start. Lineage and Arisus went out to make the running, leading over the first furlong. When they entered the back stretch, the pair were clear from Appledore, Royal Routine, and Cylinder. A couple of furlongs farther on Lineage. Arisus, Royal Routine, and Cylinder were two lengths ahead of Appledore, with Paratoo just behind. Into the straight Lineage and Arisus were clear of Cylinder, Royal Routine, and Paratoo, but once they straightened up the favourite asserted himself, and came on to hold off a challenge by Arisus, to win convincingly by a length. Lineage was two and a-half lengths away. Paratoo, who had made a dashing bid in the straight, was close fourth, and Royal Routine and Appledore followed The winner outclassed his field. Durie Hack Nineteen started for the Durie Hack Handicap. Autopay carried £558, Pakitero £340, and Royal Finance £239, but the winner turned up in Monalof, who carried £SB. Acmil was cut out when the barrier went up. Autopay, Huntingdon, Arrowzone, Orapai, Sporting Chance, and Pakitere were first to show out. Pomp being at the head of the others. Running across I the Lop Autopay still held charge, and was followed by Huntingdon, Orapai, i Sporting Chance, and Pakitere. As : they swung into the straight, Autopay | was clear of Orapai, Huntingdon, Sporting Chance, Pakitere, Taranto. and ; Pomp. Just when it looked as if Autopay had the race in hand, Mona- , lof came along, and beat Autopay by i a head. Two lengths away was Sporting Chance, while Huntingdon, Paki- j tere, Pomp, Taranto, and Pass On followed. Marangai Handicap Backers were to have an even greater blow in the Marangai Handicap, in which Mendip (£4UO) and My Own (£381) carried most money. But Count Palatine (£4O) came along at the finish, to snatch a narrow victory. In leading out of the straight Blimp and Otairi were just in front of Star Stranger, Sir Limond, My Own, Marjoram, and Mendip. Into the back stretch Otairi and Blimp showed the way to Star Stranger, Marjoram, My | Ow n, Ruanui, Mendip, Sir Limond. and | Count Palatine, while at the half-mile j Otairi, Blimp, and Ruanui were clear ! oj' Mendip, Star Stranger, Marjoram, j and My Own, who were together, with : Balloon, Count Palatine, and Kawha- j kina, next. Blimp and Otairi were I still in front as they turned for home, while Marjoram, My Own. Tourist, and Count Palatine wore right up with them. Once fairly in line for the judge, Mendip came through. but Count Palatine also put in a run, and got up to beat the favourite by a short neck. Otairi was third, a length away, and Marjoram, Yoma, Star Stranger, Blimp, and Balloon followed in that order. The winner paid just on a third of a century. Flying Handicap Ceremony was sorted out as unbeatable in the Flying Handicap, carrying £528, with Laughing Prince, £375, and Arrow Lad, £334, next. Silvermine (£162) was rather neglected. When the tapes went up, Silvermine was smartest out, being followed by Lady Quex, Ceremony, Arrow Lad, and Laughing Prince. The favourite had assumed the lead at the half-mile, where he was in front of Arrow Lad, Lady Quex. Silvermine, Equitant, and Laughing I*l-1006. Ceremony struck trouble after passing the three furlong peg, and Arrow Lad. Silvermine, Equi- i tant, and Laughing Prince were ahead j of him on the turn for home. A great i finish developed from the distance. Just when it appeared as if Laughing Prince would repeat his victory of last year, Silvermine got through to beat Arrow Lad by a head, with Laughing Princo half a head away third. Then came Equitant, Limosin, Lady Quex, Bright Glow, Veronese, and Staghunter. Later results are: Putiki Hack Handicap, of £200: SI fur. —lO Joyspear (It. J. Morris), 8.3, U.
