HORSE OVER-DRIVEN

DRIVER FINED £3 Charged with cruelly beating and also with ovor-driving a horse. Jack Wilson was fined £3 on the second charge by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court today. The first charge was dismissed and he was given 4S hours to pay the fine and costs. A tramcar conductor stated in evidence that defendant was belting the horse with a strap and was zig-zagging along the Great South Road. In evidence defendant said the horse was fresh and started home at a vigorous pace on its own. He had nothing in the cart with which to beat it. Mr, Hunt: They had too much beer in them to know at what pace they were going. Detective-Sergeant Kelly: Why did you disappear on the way to the station? —I didn’t want to be locked up for nothing. Mr. Hunt: They had too much liquor. That, was the trouble.
