MERRY HITTING
AUSTRALIA LOSES TWO FOR 163 RUNS MATCH WITH ENGLAND Reed. 10.25 a m. LONDON, Thurs. The Australian cricketers today resumed the match at Scarborough against an All England composed of players who have played in the Test matches. England at stumps yesterday had lost nine wickets for 218 runs. When Wyatt declared without any addition to the score Jackson and Fairfax opened for Australia at 2.45 on a wicket made for bowlers. Jackson had nicely made 24 when he was bowled by an almost unplayable ball. Bradman came in and went for runs. In 35 minutes he had scored 42. It was hurricane hitting and he was particularly severe on Parker and Rhodes. Kippax soon followed Bradman’s lead, cutting and driving perfectly. Later he lifted Rhodes for a straight six. Bradman at 60 was missed twice. Duckworth fumbled an easy chance of stumping him, and Sandham dropped a sitter. The pair added 100 in SO minutes. Bradman’s 50 occupied 50 minutes, and Kippax’s, 65 minutes. Merry hitting continued until an appeal against the light was successful. The scores are: ENGLAND First Innings (declared) lIS Bowling.—Wall, 2-35: Fairfax, 1-58; Hurwood, 1-3; Hornibrook, 5-69; McCabe 0-6; Grimmett, 0-1.
